COO Blog - Technology

Whether you are a big or small contractor, you know the value of saving time - especially in these economic times.  So when you're building your project schedule, instead of doing it by hand, you'll enjoy using this Excel spreadsheet that is configured as a schedule.  Not only does it look like a schedule, but it acts like one too!

With conditional formatting and formulas to calculate days, this schedule uses Excels technology to automatically calculated your end dates and builds a Gantt chart at the same time.

The Gantt chart is incredible as it will highlight three important items:  Duration Days for the Task, Completed Days, and any date you want to highlight - this feature is called "Todays Date".

The outline feature for task items allows you to quickly reduce the length of your schedule so you can quickly reference other items.  This is also handy if you only want to provide a presentation in "simplified" format - giving an overall projected schedule.

New features in the works include a 'View Switcher" that will allow you to switch the Schedule between a 5-Day, 7-Day, or Weekly schedule.  Also in development are two functions that will allow you to quickly build your schedule with a special menu where you can build Categories and Tasks without clicking around the spreadsheet.  Just quickly build your schedule with your anticipated durations day, predecessors, and bingo - you're done!

It's hard to believe this is a template built with Excel.  You just can't beat it and no one will ever believe you built this schedule using Excel.

Here is a quick look at the template.
